It is Wednesday May 18th. It has been snowing since last Saturday. I think summer will come someday!
Last Thursday I went with Don, Polly, and some of the members from the
Truckee Community Garden down to the Carson Valley to visit
Full Circle Compost to talk and learn more about soil, shelters, and anything else pertaining to mountain gardening. We came away with ideas to implement into each of our individual projects and inspired to keep going with what we are doing.
Our guide reminded us that the
growing season doesn't actually start for us here in the mountains until June. It then goes until about November. Why? Because the soil needs to warm up in order for the seeds to germinate and grow. We may receive snow during the later fall months, but the soil still maintains a warmer temp from the summer months. This is very basic information, but an important concept to remember as snow starts to melt! Everyone, including myself, is ready to get planting the exact moment that the sun shows its rays! As he spoke of this I laughed at the antics I have put myself and my seeds through since April.
